there is a construction site of a medieval castle – Today

Have you ever wondered how would a real castle built using original 13th century tools?

Then it turns out that there is one such castle currently under construction: Château de Guédelon in a experiment called the “World’s Greatest Archaeological Study” – the construction began in 1997, and it is located about two hours drive south of Paris.

The site of the castle was chosen because it is rich in resources that are essential for construction of a castle, as it was in the Middle Ages:

A quarry for stones, a forest with abundant wood, and a small lake near the construction site.

The construction of the castle was made exclusively with tools from the medieval times – Moreover the workers are dressed in clothes that fit medieval times, in order to imitate as much as possible the construction of such a castle.

The construction site includes: builders, some carve and incise the stones and some who actually lay the bricks, carpenters and woodcutters, porters who transport the materials, blacksmiths who manufacture tools and other iron products. Everything!

there is a GIANT facebook group of people pretending to be TINY ants

Currently the group has 1.8 million people (or … ants?) pretending to be ants, the idea is (very) simple –
Members of the group upload pictures and videos about being ants. The main goal is to serve a fabricated queen and food for her, such as various crumbs, cake, chocolate and… well all that ants eat. Members write comments like “LIFT,” “OBEY” and “SUGAR” as they pretend to be ants.

some even tattooed an ant and the word “LIFT” on themselves

Scorpions Glow under UV Light

Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light.
There have been several hypothesis among scientists as to what evolutionary role does this “glow” play – but there is no definite firm answer. Another crazy fact is that even some Scorpion Fossils from millions of years ago still to this day – glow under blacklight.

It is pretty amazing if you stroll along in the desert with UV flashlight – Those sneaky little animals become all of a sudden quite conspicuous.

The Giant panda poops up to 40 times a day because Pandas eat aaaallloooott of bamboo their gut bacteria (and structure) used to digest meat.
Somehow somewhere along the way pandas decided to stop being omnivores and just “go vegan” the only problem is that While eating bamboo they can only digests 30% Of what date and therefore they poop so many times a day.
Sometimes pandas even poop during their sleep and while eating (yuck).

Another interesting fact is that the panda poo, Is being used as manure to grow tea-plants which are actually considered the most expensive tea you can buy (The price sometimes reach up to 69,000$ usd per kilogram of tea bland that was grown with Panda poo).

Facts about the Sea of Galilee

Here are two things you probably did not know about the Sea of Galilee (best known for the place where it is said Jesus has walked on water):

  1. It is not really a sea, it is a freshwater lake (a.k.a Lake Tiberias or Kinneret) and it is not really a big lake either, it is only 53 kilometers (33 miles) in circumference, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) long, and 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) wide. The Sea of Galilee’s maximum depth is roughly 43 meters (141 feet).
  2. The Sea of Galilee’s is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake which is 90 minutes car ride from there – 122 kilometers or 75 miles).

How to say Great Dane in Danish

You know how in China “Chinese food” is just food?
Did you ever think about how Danish people call the Great Dane in Danish?

First, it is worth mentioning that Great Danes are actually not originally from Denmark. They’re from Germany.
Second by Guinness World Records the tallest dog who ever lived amongst us was a Great Dane named Zeus.
Zeus measured 1.118 meters (44 inches) – When Zeus was standing on his rear legs he reached a staggering 2.23 meters (7 ft 4 inches) tall! this dog should have played in the NBA.

And now, to the moment you were all waiting for, in the Danish language a great dane is a “Granddanois” which means Great Dane, but, in… French.
Wait, what?

Yes, the German dog which has a Danish dog’s name in the Danish language, is actually in French.
Why? well, until 1878 it was named “Englische Dogge” but the Germans would not have it – this is a dog that was mainly bred in Germany by German aristocracy, so they formed a special committee just for that pressing issue and came up with such an original name – from “Englische Dogge” to “Deutsche Dogge” but this was not the end of the story.
Due to “increasing tensions between Germany and other countries” as wikipedia puts it in a very polite way, the world wanted to call this dog in a different name, no committee required.

Thanks to a fancy french dude (with a very long name) “Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon”

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon

Buffon was mainly known for being the father of modern natural history (He wrote a encyclopaedic collection of 36 large volumes written 1755),
As he documented his many travels, in one of them he saw large dogs in Denmark, and named them “grand danois” – Great Dane.
The Danish name stuck – and in Denmark it stuck in Buffon’s original language French.

Butterflies eat poop

Any 5 year-old can tell you that butterflies are beautiful creatures who drink nectar from the blossoming flowers, right?
so magical and pure… Well, it is true, but what is also true is that butterflies eat poop (just like the horsefly that we learned to hate), AND – not just poop! Butterflies are quite naughty – they get drunk, they eat dead bodies and… drinking tears of other animals.

So, yes… generally speaking, butterflies are a bunch of weirdos.

What was before Radar?

Before the invention of the radar, when early detection of approaching war aircrafts was necessary, there was a sound-based detection device.

Large tubes were used, and well… it was just amplifying the noise of the aircrafts engines.

Over time, as the planes became faster and flew higher and higher, the device lost its initial effectiveness. The radar replaced it.
The tool’s nickname was “the war tuba”.
