Rice traditionally grows in flooded fields (also known as “Paddy” / “Rice paddy”) mostly in southern and eastern Asia, But why rice plants require SO much water? well, they do not!
So why flood the fields? Because rice is able to survive such flooding, but weeds and/or harmful animals are unable to live in it. The flooded water simply protects the rice.
Some cultures upgraded the water ponds of the rice fields and added fish farming to them. Fish eat insects or slugs that can be harmful to rice. Fish also are causing movement of soil in the water and thus shifts around nutrients from the soil to the crops.
The fish themselves then become a food source that contributes to dietary diversity.
